An Explorers Team Surprise Adventure
Thursday November 17, 2005 at 2:30 P.M. Explorers Team students were asked to meet in the school parking lot, with their parents, at 6:30 P.M. No one except Mr. Johnson knew where they were going. 14 families met at the appointed time and began a journey of adventure into the darkness of the Los Padres National Forest. Driving along steep narrow roads the group arrived below the summit of Whitaker Peak. After parking their vehicles participants hiked the remaining distance to the summit where they were greeted with a tremendous panoramic view of the Santa Clarita Valley and a cup of hot apple cider.

Weather Conditions at Whitaker Peak
Directions to Whitaker
Peak This trip will require driving on a dirt
road that is bumpy, narrow and sometimes has rocks on it.
Drive north on Interstate 5 past Castaic
to the Templin Highway exit. Set your trip odometer to zero as you
turn left at the stop sign at the bottom of the
ramp. Drive under the freeway to the Golden
State Highway and turn right. Drive 1.9 miles to a sign on the left
that reads Whitaker Peak Road. Turn left onto this road. Set your trip
meter to zero and follow road 6N53. Watch for cars coming from the other
direction. At 1.9 miles you will pass a gate on your
right with "6N53A" on it. Continue on. Less than 100 yards from this gate you
will drive through another one. Continue on. At 2.4 miles the road will
change to dirt but the pavement will reappear
sporadically. At 4.3 miles you will drive past a
microwave tower on the left. Drive about 50 feet past the tower and
park at the "Y" in the road. From here walk up the road on the left to
the top of the hill. (If you have a four-wheel drive vehicle
it is possible to drive to the top this hill using either
route.
